Because you can adapt your intervention on the client needs. Each client is different, so what they need may differ from session to session, also.
AI choose to become a therapist because I wanted to help others to understand their feelings, thoughts and actions. Also, I love to see the changes in people when they discover what they can do when they put the effort into an important aspect of their life.
My favourite place to visit is Barcelona because I love the variety of this city.
In the first session I try to discover the story and to evaluate which type of therapy is appropriate for my client by using Person Centred principles - the issues important to the client will be identified; using active listening and my capacity for understanding the client’s central difficulties; trying to put them first and support them to ‘be in charge with their journey’.
If a client is presenting himself in a way that he will benefit just from ‘talking’, I will use PCT techniques for developing a positive therapeutic relationship. By using these techniques, I enable the client to be in the present, honest, in charge of their change, self-aware and able to analyze their own self-esteem or conditions of worth.
Sometimes all our sessions are based on PCT but in many situations the client needs some strategies and orientation to enable them to obtain what they want from therapy. If this is the case the session may concentrate on: client’s story, exploring of present emotions and thoughts, the past events which may be the cause of their actual situation, psychoeducation, use of formulation and specific strategies from CBT or Systemic therapy / Trauma Therapy / Analytic therapy etc. At the end of each session we explore what they achieved, how they feel and what is the plan for the next session.
