Why did you choose to become a therapist?
Before becoming a therapist, I worked for a number of years in the charity sector, supporting individuals in different challenging situations; first as a Family Support Worker, then as an Anti-Trafficking Advocate, specialising in supporting mothers to reunite or keep their children. Through those jobs, I gained experience in advocating for others and supporting them in making positive changes in their life.

Following on from those, I also worked as a Domestic Violence Prevention Worker and Keyworker for women in prisons and/or involved in the criminal justice system. I gained good knowledge on supporting individuals with addiction.

Those experiences have given me a passion to support individuals facing difficulties, especially women who have endured hardship and traumatic events and I decided to retrained so that I could support people on a more emotional level and focus on healing.

Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I wanted to further my education and realised that my original career path had changed. I had originally began working for the court service and after 16 years I moved to work as a family support worker then into a local council in family support services. I had really enjoyed the transition from admin office work to face to face and felt comfortable in the helping position whilst still retaining a sense of realism that I could not fix or rescue people and that it was about empowerment. I was also of an age 45 when I thought that my life experiences could help other people. It was one of the best things that I have ever done

Why did you choose to become a therapist?
I struggled with my own mental health and intense emotions for many years, and I never really understood what was wrong or why I felt the way I did. After having therapy myself and learning to understand my emotions better I realised that if everybody had this info then so many people would be feeling much better than they did.

I was surrounded by my friends & loved ones that were all suffering, all trying to cope in their own ways and I thought if I could use this knowledge to help others then I should. Now I am passionate about helping people to understand why they feel the way they do and how they can help themselves to feel better. I think we should be focusing on psychoeducation & emotional wellbeing in schools and teaching the tools to look after one's own mental health to children, and I hope to one day be able to do something to help this to change.

When I chose to become a therapist, I couldn't have told you why. It was like making a discovery about myself that I just didn't need to question.

I've since come to realise that I am fascinated by people, by their relationships, and their motivations. I have always felt like I wanted to do good in the world, as cliche as that sounds. Being a therapist allows me the privilege of experiencing many lives. I am so grateful to every client for what they share of themselves with me.
